New Breed Fitness makes home in downtown Hamtramck

Kevin Braithwaite is the type of guy you would expect to be in top shape. The former Detroit Police Department officer served on things like the department's SWAT team before starting New Breed Fitness.

Braithwaite was inspired to start the 1-year-old business after seeing how many Detroiters, both young and old, lacked fitness and the physical training needed to make it happen. Today the company is working out of a new studio in downtown Hamtramck after moving from the Russell Industrial Center a few months ago.,

"The main thing is to make money but also to help people," Braitwaite says. "This isn't just a gym. It's a community center."

New Breed Fitness
has grown to a staff of six people and a growing membership primarily from word-of-mouth. Braitwaite expects the high-visibility of his new Hamtramck location will drive up his membership numbers.

"Being in high-visibility area and this community just worked out to support my business," Braithwaite says.
