Grit Design moves mobile biz to Elevator Building on riverfront

Grit Design got its start two years ago when six colleagues decided to start their own mobile application company. Today the start-up employs 13 people and a handful of independent contractors making iPhone and Android apps from its new digs in the Elevator Building.

"It's a cool old space that has a great vibe," says Andrea Livingston, partner of Grit Design. "The other types of firms they have attracted are very similar."

Grit Design makes custom smart phones apps for bigger corporations. For instance, it created an iPhone app all about wait times for the Detroit Medical Center. It also updates websites so they are friendlier for both users and their smart phones. It is also working on other software solutions for businesses.

Grit Design grew organically from its original six hires, hiring friends and former co-workers along the way. It grew in a Madison Heights warehouse before finding the recently opened Elevator Building. Livingston and her partners hope to continue to expand their staff in their new space overlooking the Detroit River for the next few years.
