Blue Cross to begin moving into Ren Cen in May

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan plans to begin relocating the first of its 3,000 workers from Southfield to the Renaissance Center in May.

About 200 workers will make the move into the Tower 500. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan plans to occupy most of Tower 500 and 600 (the smaller squat ones that used to feature the EDS sign) with 3,000 employees by mid 2012. Those employees will join the health insurance company's headquarters campus on Jefferson and Lafayette.

"We're going to have Tower 500 pretty much filled up by this summer," says Helen Stojic, director of corporate affairs for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. Tower 500 is practically move-in ready, while Tower 600 will require more build out before it can be occupied.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan
announced the move last summer as part of its efforts to consolidate its workforce in downtown Detroit. The idea is to cut real-estate costs while also investing in unifying the non-profit's work culture onto one campus area.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan plans to keep its Blue Care Network, the non-profit's HMO subsidiary, headquarter in Southfield and its conference center in South Lyon. "We will still have a body of 1,100 employees in Oakland County," says Jerome Espy, director of external affairs for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.
