Detroit Renaissance chief says developing ‘urban core’ is important for regional economy

Doug Rothwell, president of Detroit Renaissance, talks with the Free Press about the importance creating cool cities, developing Detroit’s “urban core,” and keeping the momentum going.

Rothwell tells the Free Press:

“We feel that now is a perfect time to rally the troops for getting more serious about transforming this region’s economy. And that doesn’t necessarily mean that we ought to be putting all of our eggs in any one industry basket, including any in the technology sector. We ought to be looking to a diversified set of industries that we feel can really be grown in southeast Michigan. …

“That is just one leg of the stool for us. The other two legs of our stool are we want to advocate more in Lansing and Washington for policies that we think are going to benefit our region’s economy. And the other is to continue to grow downtown Detroit, the urban core.”
