New ‘Detroit Sign’ a roving landmark designed for social media and small business

Funded by the Downtown Detroit Partnership and the DTE Energy Foundation, The Detroit Sign is a roving landmark that will travel from neighborhood to neighborhood, encouraging people to get out of their cars, onto the sidewalks, and, hopefully, into the small businesses of Detroit’s neighborhood commercial corridors.  

The Neighborhood Resource Hub will occupy the back 3,500 square feet of the historic building, featuring flexible workspaces, meeting rooms, and more.
Historic five-and-dime department store to become Neighborhood Resource Hub in Jefferson Chalmers

Located at the corner of East Jefferson Avenue and Lakewood Street in the city’s Jefferson Chalmers neighborhood is an old S.S. Kresge’s Five and Dime Department Store first built in 1926. The building is being redeveloped as the JEI Neighborhood Resource Hub, the new home for the organization’s Housing & Neighborhood Services team.

Several key things emerged during the community engagement process that helped inform the plan: improving retail, revitalizing the Vanity Ballroom, retaining longstanding businesses, bike lanes, pedestrian safety, infrastructure and utilities, green space, and corridor character and urban design.

Jefferson East Inc. and East Jefferson Development Corp. ready to unveil master plan

The conceptual plans to guide and spur development along the Jefferson-Chalmers commercial corridor will be shared during a virtual monthly community meeting from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 30. The project area encompasses approximately 70 acres along Detroit’s East Jefferson Avenue corridor between Alter Road and Lakeview Street.

Jefferson Chalmers residents weigh in on revitalization plan

The initial draft of "Building Jefferson-Chalmers Together, a Jefferson-Chalmers Mainstreet Master Plan” was unveiled at Hope Community Church on Aug. 30 after a week of visioning workshops held between residents and Jefferson East, Inc., a community nonprofit and its for-profit development subsidiary, East Jefferson Development Corporation, or EJDevCo.
