Hoard House brings more vintage to Hamtramck’s main drag

A vintage and antique shop, Hoard House, has opened at 10022 Jos. Campau in Hamtramck. Co-owner John Dow says he and partners Stacey Trarop and Melanie Grinnell decided to fill a vacant storefront in Hamtramck for a pretty obvious reason: “I’m a bit of a hoarder with a household of stuff,” he says. Collectibles foraged from the homes the trio along with consigned goods from other people fill the shelves and racks; most items are
more than 50 years old with some kitschy exceptions a bit less long in
the teeth. Movie posters, home goods, clothing, sunglasses and more can
be found on the premises.

Two more inspirations were Hamtramck’s inexpensive rent and a neighbor, Detroit Threads, a shop that also sells vintage goods just down the street. “We thought it might promote Hamtramck,” he says. “If there were a couple of places here, people might actually come here to shop.”

Dow is well-versed in Hamtramck’s viability as owner of Painted Lady Lounge and a member of the Hamtramck Downtown Development Authority. “There are a lot of empty storefronts here in Hamtramck and (we’d like to) have some other things besides your dollar stores, jewelry shops, pawn shops — there are a lot of people in the right age group for this stuff living around here.”
