Summer in the City volunteers and our partners "paint, plant, and play" all summer long, all over the city. Once a year, we get to do all three with all of our friends, all in one place. Last year, we partnered with the Detroit Recreation Department (DRD) to beautify the shuttered
Tindal Recreation Center, which -- thanks to the incredible work of the DRD and Healthy Kidz, Inc. -- is set to reopen. The year before, we teamed up with the city of Hamtramck at
Veteran's Park, historic home to the Turkey Stearns and the Negro League's Detroit Stars. This year, we are working with DRD, the
Mars Agency and hundreds of volunteers from near and far at the Crowell Community Center.
Crowell,
on Lahser south of McNichols, is a community center in the truest sense of the term. Over the past few years, the city and neighborhood groups have invested heavily in making the space beautiful, accessible, and sustainable -- from the many amenities indoors to the hills, trails, ball fields and playscape that surround it. We are honored to paint a mural that reflects the vitality and inclusivity of the Crowell community.
We need your help to decide what to paint. Here are seven designs from the artists at the Mars Agency. View and vote below -- then come out on
Finale Friday, August 14, to be part of the painting, planting and playing. And, of course, a big BBQ.
