DEGC Welcomes Biodiesel Industries

Biodiesel Industries, a world-renowned leader in the development of alternative fuel, held a groundbreaking ceremony on May 15, 2007.   With five other facilities currently operating throughout the U.S. and abroad, this celebration marked the kickoff of their first alternative energy project in the State of Michigan.  This is also the first production facility in the biodiesel fuel industry in the City of Detroit.

The Detroit Economic Growth Corporation began working with Biodiesel Industries in 2004.  From their first site visit the company recognized that Detroit was prime to support their expansion plans.  For three years the DEGC staff focused their efforts on site selection and acquisition, various municipal approvals, and assistance with financing.  The DEGC also coordinated the project’s local and state development incentives.  Throughout this process, with the assistance of the DEGC, great partnerships developed between Biodiesel Industries, and local giants such as Detroit-based NextEnergy, and DaimlerChrysler.

The multimillion-dollar facility will be located at Baltimore Street, and Woodward Avenue.  Albert Kahn Associates will be heading up planning and design, with DeMaria Building Company overseeing construction.  Construction is targeted for completion in December 2007.  Once completed the 13,000 square foot facility will have the capacity to produce 10 million gallons of biodiesel fuel per year from a feedstock of crude, refined, and recycled vegetable oils.

The DEGC would like to welcome Biodiesel Industries to the City of Detroit.  We wish them much success!!
