Woodward continues to look better and better, and more so now that the second and third phases of a streetscaping project are finished.
The $11.5-million project has crews putting in new sidewalks, curbs, flowering trees, historic lighting and trash receptacles, as well as repairing the strip of historic brick along Woodward between I-75 and I-94.
Phase II of the undertaking cost $1.9 million and spanned Woodward between Warren Avenue and Ferry Street. Phase III cost $4.5 million and covered Woodward between I-75 and Mack Avenue.
Phase IV totals $3.8 million and will include stretches of Woodward between Selden Street and Warren and between Ferry and I-94. Construction is set to begin in early 2007 and finish later that year.
Phase I cost $1.7 million for Woodward at Mack Ave in the Orchestra Place district and was completed last summer.
The University Cultural Center Association is coordinating the effort. The construction of the first three phases was handled by the city. The fourth phase will be done by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
A combination of public and private dollars raised by the University Cultural Center Association is funding the project. The Michigan Department of Transportation, city of Detroit, Michigan Economic Development Council, Detroit Economic Growth Council, Kresge Foundation and Hudson-Webber Foundation all contributed to funding the project.
