The city celebrated the completion of renovations to Van Antwerp Park, at Wyoming and St. Martins, on July 26. The park is the home field for the
Think Detroit PAL Cougars, whose players and cheerleaders were present at the ceremony along with other neighbors.
The following improvements were made to the 18-acre park:
- repairs to existing play equipment,
- new swings and rubber protective surface,
- installation of 3 new tennis courts,
- renovated basketball court (pictured) and baseball and softball diamond,
- new football and soccer goals,
- sidewalk and fence repair and replacement, and
- removal of the existing comfort station.
The work cost $317,000 -- $290,000 from the Detroit Recreations Department's capital fund and the remainder from the
Youth Development Commission — and took about nine months. DRD director Loren Jackson explains that the entire process took over a year because of public input sessions, design and construction bidding. The next two parks targeted for make-overs by the department are Wish Egan and Sawyer, both of which are located in Next Detroit neighborhoods.
