Hamtramck’s urban trail receives $500,000 grant

Hamtramck’s Preserve Our Parks nonprofit organization recently obtained a $500,000 competitive grant for the reduction of pollution from the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments for the POP’s Hamtramck Trail project.

The organization hopes to begin work on the 1 1/2 mile trail next spring. The trail will begin in Hamtramck’s commercial district at Joseph Campau and Holbrook and continue along city streets through Hamtramck’s south side to Hamtramck Drive.

The group hopes a trail leading north from Eastern Market would eventually connect to the Hamtramck Trail. It could then link to the Dequindre Cut, a multi-purpose trail being built along a disused portion of an old railway. It is under construction now. The Dequindre Cut will connect the RiverWalk and Tri-Centennial State Park to the Eastern Market.

A total of $770,000 is needed for the completion and 10-year maintenance of the trail. The POP organization currently needs to raise $200,000 more. Part of the plan includes planting trees along the side of the urban trail.
