An easy paced 35-mile bike ride has been organized to publicize GreenWays in the city, to raise funds for the Corktown-Mexicantown Greenlink, and to promote biking as both a form of exercise and as a mode of transportation in the city. The event is to take place on 24 September, 2005 and will start at 10am in Roosevelt Park. The $20 registration fee for adults and $10 for students will help raise money for ongoing maintenance of the Corktown-Mexicantown Greenlink, a series of bikepaths being designed to connect Corktown and Mexicantown to each other and to the Detroit River.
The ride will explore some of the Detroit’s historic areas, while providing bicyclists an opportunity to see for themselves several redevelopment projects that are either underway or completed in the city. Also, “there will be two educational stops,” said Kelli Kavanaugh of the Greater Corktown Development Corporation, “one will be at Back Alley Bikes and the other at Earth Works Garden to show off an Urban Farming Project.”
The ride also promotes biking in the city. “Detroit is a fairly large town, and it is hard to get everywhere just by foot, whereas biking is fast, inexpensive and covers a lot of ground,” said Kavanaugh, “and with gas prices the way they are, biking is a much better alternative.”
“I see more and more people on bikes these days and I feel that people are choosing bikes not just for recreation, but also for transportation and exercise. And with the funding of so many greenways across the city, it is going to be easier and safer to get around,” Kavanaugh said.
Anywhere from a 100 to 150 people are expected to attend. Food, music and drinks will be served at the Roosevelt Park at 2pm for bikers and non-bikers alike
