The approximately 30 residents who have already moved into
Studio One Apartments will soon have a coffee shop and restaurant to patronize on the ground floor. Starter’s Bar & Grill and Biggby Coffee have announced that they will open locations there, joining Fifth Third Bank, Utrecht Art Supply, Radio Shack
and a second restaurant that is yet to be announced. All told, 95 percent of the
Studio One's first floor retail space is now leased.
Starter’s is a local family-owned chain that serves American cuisine. This one will be 8,000 square
feet and will have outdoor seating. This will be Starter's third location -- second in Detroit -- while its Studio One Apartments location will be Biggby's first in the city -- the chain is is expansion mode, having now tallied 100 locations in Michigan.
Utrecht is open for business and Radio Shack will open August 4,
Fifth Third Bank by September, Biggby by November and Starter's by January.
Studio One Apartments has leased 55 percent of its 124 apartments that range from 650 to 1,008 square feet and from $870 to $1,395. The southern half of the building is complete and construction will wrap on the second half by mid-August.
Marcel Burgler, principal of Grand Rapids-based
Prime Development, is thrilled to see signs of life in the building. "I go by at night and see lights on and people on
their balcony," he says. And, he hopes the Woodward-facing tenants agree that their view of the neon MOCAD sign is uniquely affirming. "I would love to wake up to every morning and see 'Everything is Going to be All Right!'"
