The first phase of this four-phased plan is now complete on Woodward at Mack Ave in the Orchestra Place district. Over $1.7 million was raised by the University Cultural Center Association (UCCA) from public sources to replace sidewalks and install large street trees, decorative lighting, trash receptacles and new sidewalks.
The UCCA has also raised an additional $2 million for the second phase that will be completed on Woodward from Warren to Ferry Street in the area that includes the Wayne State Welcome Center, the DIA, the Detroit Public Library and Detroit Historical Museum. Construction is currently underway for this Phase.
Phase III in the amount of $4.5 million has also now been funded with Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) funds and other matching dollars and will upgrade the area from Mack to the Fisher Freeway.
“We are currently fundraising for the fourth and final phase of this project,” said Timothy Colbeck of the UCCA, who estimates “the total program dollars on the four phases to be around $12.4M.”
It is projected that the final phase will be complete by December of 2006.
