Folks craving New York-style pizza (that's a round, thin crust with plenty of cheese) have a new eatery downtown to satisfy their appetites.
Slices Pizza opened last week at 1043 Woodward in the Campus Martius district (next door to CVS Pharmacy, and across the way from the Compuware building). The new restaurant offers sit-down dining and takeout options; with a menu that highlights the pizza pie (six different combinations) but also features salads, grinders and dessert.
Demian Brewer is the manager of Slices Pizza. He says the new dining destination, which has hired eight employees to man the counters and ovens, has done steady business (mostly through word-of-mouth).
"It's been fantastic so far," he says. "This is our first lunch that's been a little slow, and it might be the heat. So far we have more of a lunch crowd from neighboring businesses."
Brewer says Slices answered the age-old pizza quandary (square or round?) by examining the competition in the local downtown market. "We have a lot of women who come in and want something quick and lighter -- that's why a slice of round is easier," he says.
They also decided to keep Slices open till midnight, in an attempt to capture the late-night dining market.
"We want to stay open later because everybody at the bars wants something greasy to stick to their ribs," Brewer says.
And yes, Detroit -- they deliver. The seven-mile radius extends from the river to Grand Blvd., and includes Corktown and the East Jefferson districts.
Slices Pizza is located at 1403 Woodward. Stop by Monday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to midnight, and Sundays from noon to 11 p.m. Give them a ring at 313-963-8800 or visit Slices Pizza on
