Salvation Army center gets $27 million transformation

The Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC), located on Fort just west of Trumbull, is currently undergoing a $27 million transformation.

The work, which started on the west end of the building and is expected to move to the east end later this month, is approximately half-completed. Colleen Kinney, director of community Relations for the Salvation Army, explains the work as “basically a new curtain wall, new HVAC, fire suppression, a new roof, new windows, new walls, new everything.”

The building has served as the location for both the ARC and a thrift store, but come July, the thrift store will be moving to 1200 W. Fort, across the street from Wayne County Community College’s Downtown Campus. “The new store will have more parking and is really just a more appropriate space,” Kinney says.

The 356,000 square-foot ARC will house classrooms, training rooms, a dining facility, a chapel, recreation space, offices, and accommodations for 300 residents. The DeMattia Group served as the project architect and the JM Olson as general contractor. The project is scheduled to be complete on Dec. 23.
