Midtown Corner Café to open this month in Mid-Med

The Midtown Corner Cafe, located at the corner of John R and Canfield, will open its doors this month. Proprietor Shubert Sheena is looking for a steady stream of Medical Center employees, Wayne State students and area residents to visit his light-filled and inviting restaurant.

Sheena, along with his brother Gilbert, owns and operates the Rivertown Deli on East Jefferson, and had toyed with the idea of opening a Midtown location. “We already do a lot of trade with the hospitals, so it seemed natural.” The space, developed in conjunction with the Mid-Med Lofts, was not even on the market for a week when the Sheenas saw the “for lease” sign and inquired about the property.

Midtown Corner Café will serve breads baked fresh on-site, fresh-cut meat, black angus burgers, homemade soup and butter-based cookies, and will offer a salad bar. “We will serve the best of everything. The best meat, the best produce, nothing generic,” says Sheena. Their coffee will be imported from Italy and ground locally.

The 2,700 square-foot space seats 60 and will offer wireless Internet access. Initially, the Sheenas intend to employ 10.
