An old favorite is about to get a new look. LJ's Lounge, a Michigan Avenue staple for 25 years, is in the process of renovating its facade. Once work starts on June 1, it should be about a week until the front is completely revamped. But don't worry -- inside you'll still be able to get your favorite beer for the same low price.
The modifications will drastically alter the exterior wall and entryway. The top two rows of blue metal squares that compose the current facade will receive a fresh coat of paint, as will the wall of the building next to LJ's. The remaining portion of the wall is slated to be torn out and replaced with wood paneling and three new windows. LJ's also will get a canvas awning, illuminated by gooseneck lighting, that will run the complete length of the building.
The project is the first major undertaking for Detroit-based Virtuoso Design + Build, which as its name suggests, is the company that both designed and will ultimately build the new façade. Owner Mark Klimkowski says that the vendors supplying his materials are all also from Detroit. "I feel that it's important to keep it local," he says. "It's good for businesses to support each other and stick together."
L J's Lounge is located at 2114 Michigan Ave. and is open from noon to 2 a.m. every day. A party to celebrate the new facade is scheduled for Friday, June 11.
