Highland Park farmer's market brings out hundreds of residents

Correction: The dates for the Farmers Market were incorrect in the 9/19 issue of Model D; the correct dates are below.

The Highland Park Urban Farmers Market continues Oct. 7 and 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the former Sears Site on Woodward. Vendors, many of them from Highland Park, sell fresh produce, as well as goods from the local, family-owned Victor Bakery.

The farmers market has been funded in part by the State of Michigan's Cities of Promise Initiative, which is working with a total of nine economically distressed communities, including Hamtramck, Pontiac and Benton Harbor. MSHDA, the state agency acting as the lead, hopes that a local group will continue the farmers market after this initial pilot year of funding.

MSHDA's Joanne Brown is working with the many community groups — including the City of Highland Park, HP Devco, the Highland Park Urban Farmers Coalition, Operation Weed & Seed and the Wayne-Metropolitan Community Action Agency — and is optimistic about its long-term prospects. She notes that almost 200 people turned out for the market's first day. "It was a very good turnout and an asset to the neighborhood," she says.
