Grand Haven Homes LLC broke ground for two models on Monday, Dec 5., as part of the promise made by Hamtramck to rebuild some 200 home for residents who were displaced nearly 40 years ago and who filled a lawsuit against the city.
This is “single-handedly the most important development for Hamtramck, it’ll be what turns the city around,” says Erik Tungate, director of community and economic development for Hamtramck. In addition to adding new housing stock, the project will bring in 200 new taxpayers to the community.
Grand Haven Homes will initially build about 60 homes, valued at $110,000 to about $140,000. All homes will have attached garages, full basements and brick fronts.
The homes will be built as the plaintiffs are approved for occupancy. So far seven families have been approved. After the list of plaintiffs has been exhausted, homes will then be put on the public market.
