Long-vacant land at the southwest corner of Caniff and Gallagher is to
be developed into 6,000 square feet of retail space. Erik Tungate, the
community and economic developer director for the City of Hamtramck,
describes the project as, “non-strip mall retail. The front of the
building faces Caniff, and you enter the parking lot from the alley
behind.”
Although the developer initially desired a development with parking in
front, Tungate worked with them to design the more-urban model they are
now going forward with. There will be 16 parking spaces in the rear,
which will provide sufficient parking for the development but Tungate
comments on the inherent area’s walkability by noting, “This is
Hamtramck—people aren’t going to drive to this anyways."
The zero-setback building will feature a canopy and brick fascia. The
city’s Plan Commission has approved the design, and construction will
begin by July 1.
