Contemporary design store to open in Hamtramck on Sept. 1

Architect Gina Reichert is opening a design store and studio Sept. 1 on Jos. Campau in Hamtramck. For now, Design 99 features local and regional artists, but she plans to expand that reach to national talent in the near future.

Reichert says that she and her partner, Mitch Cope, are taking a contemporary approach to design. The front half of the space will be reserved to showcase and sell art objects, while the rear will serve as her architectural design studio, a place where someone can obtain over-the-counter design advice.

Reichert says she chose Hamtramck for several reasons. "It is a pretty vital commercial strip," she says, "(and) we are interested in serving a community that is underexposed to contemporary design." Reichert also wants to increase Detroit's level of exposure to contemporary design. "Given better options, people would make different choices," she says.

Design 99 will be open Tuesday though Saturday 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Featured artists include Nina Bianchi, co-lab*, Jeff Karolski and Graem Whyte. Its grand opening will be celebrated on Sept. 1 to coincide with the Hamtramck Labor Day Festival.
