The former Detroit Detroit Police Third Precinct headquarters, located on W. Vernor between the Michigan Central Station and I-75, is slated to re-emerge as a neighborhood arts center with an eye toward educating youth and seniors in the community.
The Detroit Brownfield Redevelopment
Authority (DBRA) recently approved a $195,000 brownfield tax incentive
for the project, which is estimated to cost $2 million.Creative Arts Center, LLC, an entity of
Southwest Solutions, is taking on the project. "We think that the Third Precinct building is in a great location," says Southwest Solution's Bob O'Brien
. "It's a natural for the arts and
culture organizations that have grown up in Southwest Detroit to have a place where they can have their offices, have studios, galleries and performance space."
The Third Precinct building has been vacant since 2005, when the Detroit Police Department consolidated precincts into larger districts. It is located at 2802 W. Vernor Highway near the Southwest Detroit Welcome Center and Mercado.
