New Corktown art space promises experimental works, international perspective

On Michigan Avenue just west of Rosa Parks, a navy blue building with airy white curtains is the newest art kid on the block. Communique is small — just under 1,000 square feet — but its 20′ ceilings with exposed wood beams create the illusion of lots of space.

And co-directors Xi Walls and Micho McAdow have plans to fill that space with multi-media artwork from across the globe. “We want to take an international-based approach to things,” says Walls.

The duo met through McAdow’s wife and clicked immediately. Both are well-traveled visual artists who dabble in both video and film. “Aesthetically, we share something,” says Walls. “We trust each other visually — we don’t have to justify or explain to the other person.”

“The Female by Female,” Communique’s first show, is from 6-10 p.m.  Nov. 21. The reception will include refreshments, light hors d’oeuvre, a paneled discussion and a short film.

Communique is located at 2015 Michigan Ave. and can be reached at 313-962-0451.
