Motor City Car Share is hoping Detroiters will rethink their dependency on automobiles and embrace a service already popular in other big cities.
The nonprofit organization gives Detroiters, a third of whom don’t own cars, a way to have access to a car when needed, and not have the financial burden of owning one. Car Share members reserve times when they want to use the cars and pay for the time and mileage they use.
Car Share is promoting a “whole concept of sustainability, and doing it right,” says co-founder Jacob Corvidae. “The service helps reduce auto usage, encourage other forms of transportation, curb sprawl, reduce pollution, promote economic development, and provide and affordable service to people who couldn’t afford a car.”
Motor City Car Share also is committed to using biodesiel fuel in its cars. “You can run 100 percent biodesiel in an unmodified engine,” says co-founder Jacob Corvidae. “We are working on bringing biodesiel pumps into the city.” Currently, the group travels just outside the city to obtain the agriculturally based fuel.
Motor City Car Share is located in North Corktown on Rosa Parks. For more information visit www.motorcitycarshare.org.
