Caniff
Electric Supply completed an expansion of its headquarters in December
and is now in the process of tripling its warehouse space on Caniff at
I-75 in Hamtramck. The main facility doubled in size from 9,000 to
18,000 square feet while its neighboring 6,000-square-foot warehouse
has been torn down to make room for a new 18,000-square-foot warehouse
and a 21-car parking lot.
Caniff Electric’s president, Doug
Bemis, points to the company’s rapid growth — from $10 million in sales
in 2000 to $36 million in 2005 — as reason for the overall expansion.
As for the warehouse, Bemis notes, “We were renting three warehouses —
one in Hamtramck, two in the city of Detroit — so the cost involved in
driving to all those warehouses is why we’re (expanding our warehouse
on-site). It just makes sense.”
Bemis, who attributes his
company’s success to its reputations and its employees — “we have a
great team” — is comfortable with his decision to lay down deeper roots
in Hamtramck. “We love it, we’ve been here for 24 years and don’t ever
plan on leaving. We like being in the heart of the city. And, we have
nine delivery trucks and we are within five minutes of any major
freeway hub in the city.”
The warehouse construction is anticipated to be complete by Thanksgiving.
