Café 1923 is open for business in Hamtramck. Located on Holbrook east of Lumpkin, the former butcher shop/corner store has been resurrected as a coffee house by owners Sean Kowalski, Armen Gulian and Shannon Lowell.
Open since Oct. 1, the café features free wi-fi, table seating in the cheery front room, an outdoor patio and a smoking lounge in the rear of the building. Besides coffee and coffee drinks, it serves tea, smoothies, sandwiches and Sunday bagels.
Café 1923’s already-loyal patrons have made their gratitude for a Hamtramck coffee house very apparent to the owners. Kowalski says, “This has been a really big thing for the city—a lot of people have taken a shine to us.” In fact, one enthusiastic patron posted a “Top 10 belated Thanksgiving thanks givings” at
the cafe's myspace page, expressing such sentiments as “Espresso with lemon zest!” “Comfortable seating!” and “The best smelling bathroom in the universe!”
Café 1923 features live music on Friday evenings as well as regular art exhibitions. On Dec. 1, there will be a “Gift Stravaganza” and on Dec. 9, a showing from the
Hamtramck Art Collective (HATCH), both focusing on local artists. The space is also available for meeting; HATCH, local businesses holding staff meetings and the Hamtramck DDA are already making Café 1923 their second home.
