Bizdom U has welcomed its newest class of entrepreneurs, 15 in total, to Midtown.
"We have folks who are just out of college and folks who have been in the working world for 20 years," says Ross Sanders, executive director of
Bizdom U. "It's a broad range."
These new entrepreneurs will go through an intensive four-month curriculum that will take them from business idea to start-up. The program is full-time so students receive a stipend to pay their everyday bills, a laptop to work from and a number of other items and services to go with their training.
Bizdom U, non-profit, provides the free service so it can help create an entrepreneurial culture. Graduates of the 3-year-old program, 35 so far, go on to start their own business or partner with other grads to create a start-up. Recent examples are
Core Merchant and
PostEgram. Bizdom U plans to field another class early next year.
Quicken Loans founder Dan Gilbert started Bizdom U on Wayne State University's campus in 2007. Each class at Bizdom U receives training, mentorship and resources to start and operate a business. Each graduate that establishes a Detroit-based business can receive start-up capital from the Bizdom U Fund.
