When the extensive renovation and expansion of the
Detroit Institute of Arts was completed in 2007, its existing roof was left untouched.
"We raised money to do everything but the roof and we didn't want to take on any debt, so we deferred roof work for a while," says DIA executive vice-president Ann Marie Erickson.
That's soon to change, as the museum has been awarded a $750,000 Federal earmark for its repair.
Work will begin at the end of 2010 or the beginning of 2011. Erickson credits United State Representative Carolyn Cheeks-Kilpatrick and Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow with helping the DIA navigate the appropriations process.
This is the museum's first earmark. It requires no matching funds.
