New maps and signs to help guide visitors Downtown
The
Detroit Economic Growth Corp. has been working to install 29 new
directional signs with maps to help people get around Downtown. The
project is “something that the city of Detroit has been planning for
quite some time,” says Malik Goodwin of the DEGC.
The idea for the permanent signs originated from the City of
Detroit’s Transportation and Engineering Department master plan as a
way to make it easier for pedestrians and vehicles to navigate the
city.
Arrows and text point the way to places of interest, and a map
highlights major venues. The Super Bowl host committee also will add
temporary information to help people find their way during the big
event.
The Michigan Department of Transportation provided a majority of the
grant money for the project. The city’s Downtown Development Authority
provided money for the design and engineering. The Downtown Detroit
Partnership also helped fund the design and engineering, and helped the
city acquire grant money.
The installation should be finished by Jan. 30.
