Detroit’s OpTech experiences huge growth spurt, set for even bigger one

Business has been more than good ever since OpTech moved from Troy to downtown Detroit in 2005. The IT firm in the Guardian Building has gone from a couple of million dollars in revenues and about a dozen employees to $11 million in revenues and 85 employees today.

“It has been the beginning of what has been a very good run,” says Rick Anderson, vice president of sales for OpTech. “It (the Guardian Building) is sort of our good luck charm.”

And the future looks even brighter for the company. It is bidding on a number of U.S. Department of Transportation and Michigan Department of Transportation contracts and expects to take a number of them down. Winning some of those contracts alone will mean OpTech hiring another 10-15 people or “more depending on what else happens” later this year, Anderson says.

“We’re really well positioned,” Anderson says. “We think we’re going to go from $11 million to $50 million (in revenues) in the next 3-5 years.”

OpTech is ranked 1171 in the annual ranking of Inc. 5000's fastest-growing private companies in the country. The 2008 Inc. 5000 list measures revenue growth from 2004 through 2007.

OpTech, founded in 1999, has clients in financial, insurance, utilities, manufacturing and healthcare sectors.  It also has offices in Washington, DC, Atlanta, North Carolina, Hawaii and Texas.
