Great Lakes Electronics Corp. hires 40 people, plans for more expansion

One person's trash is this company's treasure. Great Lakes Electronics Corp. on Greenfield on the city's far west side gets paid to take away old computers, bringing more jobs here.

The firm is about 150 people strong with about a third of those people in Detroit. It also has six locations across the country and has hired 40 people in the last year. It hopes to do that again this year if it continues to grow at its current pace.

The company specializes in taking away the old computers, monitors, printers and other assorted miscellaneous electronics for a small fee of anywhere between $5 and $15. It's stock comes from big companies like Quicken Loans, school districts and community recycling drives.

"We're anticipating in the neighborhood of 50 million pounds of material passing through our docks this year," says Kerry Grushoff, vice president of Great Lakes Electronic Corp.
