One of the world's biggest brands is teaming up with one of academia's biggest names now that General Motors and Carnegie Mellon University are establishing a Collaborative Research Lab.
The lab will allow people from both institutions to work together on autonomous driving technologies. Autonomous driving is an emerging technology sector that promises to greatly influence how drivers and their vehicles interact. Think of it as a way of making today's cars smarter.
The lab, located in Carnegie Mellon's campus in Pittsburgh, will work under a five-year, $5 million agreement and operate as an extension of GM's Global Research & Development network. Last year a team from the two institutions won first place at the DARPA Urban Challenge, a competition between driverless vehicles over a 55-mile course. GM and Carnegie Mellon first started working together on such technologies in 2000.
