Movement design contest winner to be unveiled tomorrow

This year's Movement's look will be released to the world Wednesday.

Paxahau and 323 East (the Ohm Creative Group guys) held a come-one-come-all competition this year to find some local talent to design the look of this year's electronic music festival. Movement's fan voted for the top 10 contestants via Paxahau's web site. Here are the three runners-up.

John Ryan Cassidy - A Ferndale resident and lead designer at Octane Design in Royal Oak. The College for Creative Studies graduate also worked at Elemental of Troy and Vanguard Creative of Farmington Hills before going to Octane Design.

Kero - A West Bloomfield resident and an independent graphic designer who does graphic design work for the likes of the Detroit Underground record label. He also went to the College for Creative Studies.

Gabe Real - A Troy resident and owner of Real Dzine, which specializes in graphic design services. Its niche is in the electronic music industry. Real is also a self-taught graphic designer who founded Detek Events.

The winner is responsible for the overall visual aesthetic of the event, including festival advertising, t-shirts, banners and the web site. They will also receive $5,000, a VIP chalet for family and friends at the festival and a gift bag with festival gear.

"This is a big job," says Jason Huvaere, president and co-founder of Paxahau. "Our entire design budget is going into this job, so we need a serious candidate."

Huvaere and Movement's other organizers wanted to use the contest as a way of shining more light on the work of local designers.

This is Detroit's 10th electronic music fest, and it was recently named festival of the year by URB Magazine. Paxahau took over the festival in 2006, bringing it back to solvency while maintaining its electronic music credo.
