Detroiter turns passion into Corktown start-up, CoolPlacestoLive.com

Karyn McCray loves helping people find the perfect place to live. She lives and breathes leasing. The only thing she enjoys nearly as much is being her own boss, running her new leasing website CoolPlacestoLive.com.

The Corktown resident worked for years in property management, helping people find the best apartment. She was working for an apartment project in the greater downtown area when fate stepped in and prompted her to start CoolPlacestoLive.com

"The contract abruptly ended and that left me without a job or an income," McCray says. "With the economy the way it is, I thought what can I do for myself so I don't have to work for anybody."

CoolPlacestoLive.com focuses on taking the stress out of finding the best place to live in downtown, Midtown, New Center and Corktown. It allows users to get an idea of what the neighborhoods are like and what places are available in each area. Fees for the service range from $40 for a listing showing appointment to $660 for McCray to handle the move-in.

McCray launched the website in December and wants to work with the local Live Downtown programs. She hopes to turn the website into her full-time job this year and create enough revenue to bring on an employee or two.
