The Midtown Loop, a 2-mile urban greenway encircling Kirby, John R,
Canfield and Cass Streets, has been awarded a $25,000 Implementation
Grant from the Michigan State University Land Policy Institute (LPI).
“The LPI is known for working collaboratively on projects that are
innovative and creative, and built on smart growth principles,"
saysAnnmarie Borucki of University Cultural Center Association (UCCA),
the organization spearheading the project. "We are pleased that our
greenway project is deemed to be of this caliber.”
The Midtown Loop will be constructed in four phases. Phase 1 will
consist of construction along Kirby from Cass to John R and John R from
Kirby to Canfield at a cost of $3.1 million. Phase 1 construction is
anticipated to begin in spring 2007.
The total cost of the project is $10 million, with $2.9 million already
raised and an additional $1.8 million forthcoming. It has previously
been supported by the Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan’s
Greenways Initiative and the Michigan Department of Transportation.
The Midtown Loop is one aspect of UCCA’s holistic vision for Midtown.
“It will highly contribute to the overall urban environment, while
balancing the needs of pedestrians, bicyclists, and automobile
drivers," Borucki says. "And at the same time, it will enhance public
health.”
