Fred's Key Shop has stood guard at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and Second Ave. since 1962. While Midtown slowly changes around it, Fred's continues on the tack that has served it well for four decades: providing a necessary service in the best way possible.
The full-service locksmith has three trucks on the road for on-site services and sells locks, deadbolts and safes in the store. When it comes to cars, Fred's can install kill switches, repair steering columns, code alarms, set up remote car starters and create high security keys.
Fred's has many stalwart customers, such as the Detroit Medical Center and the Detroit Police Department, and construction activity in the area has brought new clients, like all three casinos.
Old or new is irrelevant, says Connie York. "Whether they are new apartment buildings or the've been around for a long time, they're forever needing new locks," she says. "We're absolutely busy all the time."
Fred's is at 34709 Second Ave. and can be reached at 313-831-5770. The shop's hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
